Full Steam Ahead!
When I was working with the Meadowlark Festival a few years ago, I remember answering a ticket order request on the phone, which to this day reminds me that we often have to face reality before we can reap its rewards. I helped a gentleman purchase season tickets for himself and his wife, but a few moments later he called back to say he had made a mistake. He sheepishly said “I’m sorry, but my wife tells me that we’re old, and so we qualify for the senior discount.” I always remember this conversation when I find myself living a life that seems unreal. In my mind, I’m still a member of the UNL piano faculty who attends Lied Center events as a patron. Now, they tell me that I’m the Executive Director of this spectacular hall!
I have been coming to work at the Lied Center for two weeks now, but continue to wonder if it’s real. I’ve been listening to the people from the community, the university, and the state, and understand that the responsibility of helping to provide first-rate performing arts experience for them is very real. I’ve been working closely with the dedicated staff at the Lied Center, and know that their un-ending enthusiasm and commitment to providing a truly memorable experience for our patrons is also very much real.
To that end, I’ve rolled up my sleeves, put my thinking cap on, and I’m ready for “full steam ahead.” The reality is that many hours of hard work and creativity go into each event we present at the Lied, but you deserve no less. We will explore every opportunity to enhance your experience at the Lied Center, and I’m certain that the upcoming season will be the beginning of our finest hour. It’s not enough for us to just have you attend a show – we want to make you say “Wow!” I look forward to seeing many of you here – and often.
