With Special Guest Folk Singer/Songwriter Susan Werner

First praised for her work as a founding member of GRAMMY® Award-winning Nickel Creek, multi-instrumentalist Sara Watkins has since established an extraordinary solo career including highly acclaimed studio albums, regular appearances on “A Prairie Home Companion” and collaborations with artists such as John Mayer and The Decemberists. On Nov. 30 at 7:30 p.m. she performs in her Lied Center debut with special guest folk singer/songwriter Susan Werner.

Sara Watkins is a singer-songwriter from Los Angeles and founding member of the progressive bluegrass group Nickel Creek along with her brother Sean and mandolinist Chris Thile. In 2015, Sara and Sean toured and released their family-band-of-sorts project, Watkins Family Hour, that included stops at Conan, NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert and Newport Folk Festival. The project featured an all-star band of Fiona Apple, Benmont Tench, Sebastian Steinberg and Don Heffington. In 2016, Watkins released her first solo offering in nearly four years.

“This is a breakup album with myself,” said Watkins of her third solo record, “Young in All the Wrong Ways.” Writing and recording these ten intensely soul-baring songs was a means for her to process and mark the last couple years, which have been transformative. “I looked around and realized that in many ways I wasn’t who or where I wanted to be. It’s been a process of letting go and leaving behind patterns and relationships and in some cases how I’ve considered myself. What these songs are documenting is the turmoil you feel when you know something has to change and you’re grappling with what that means. It means you’re losing something and moving forward into the unknown.”

Special guest Susan Werner, dubbed by NPR as the “Empress of the Unexpected,” will join Watkins for a performance that traverses pop, folk, blues, country, roots, jazz and gospel with grace and wit. After playing to a packed Lied Center in 2012 and 2013, Werner returns to Nebraska’s Home for the Arts with an unforgettable concert of original works and captivating anecdotes.

Tickets to a single performance are on sale at LiedCenter.org, by phone at 402-472-4747 or at the Lied Center box office, 301 N. 12th St. Students can purchase tickets at a 50 percent discount with a valid NCard.
